Peter Marigold's 'Dodai' Bench shown at Maison et Object, January 2013

Peter Marigold has shown his 'Dodai' bench at this year's Maison et Objet, Europe's largest design and interiors exhibition and trade show. Originally presented at Salone del Mobile 2012, the bench's exhibition in Paris was coordianted by Japan Creative.

Peter created the piece in collaboration with renowned Japanese furniture company Hinoki Kogei by splitting a single log of 'hiba' Japanese cypress into two pieces, which assemble to form the bench's base ('dodai' indeed means 'base' in Japanese, and the bench loosely refer to the architectural beams which form the structural foundations of Japanese dwellings). A covering was then woven from 'igusa' grass and wooden rods, which can be rolled back to reveal storage space in the bench's inner cavity. Coloured bungee cords stretch over the mat and turned, harwood knobs to hold it in place.
