'Strand' by Stuart Haygarth on display at UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre, October 2012.

Stuart Haygarth's latest work, titled 'Strand', is now on permanent display at the new UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre.

The project began as a means to address cancer as one of humanity's greatest fears. As learning to live with the disease is both a physical and mental journey, so began the conceptual basis for 'Strand'. Commissioned by University College London Hospitals, the suspended artwork is the culmination of a 500-mile coastal walk from Gravesend to Lands End during 2011. Throughout the journey, Haygarth collected man-made objects that had been washed ashore by the sea, which formed what he calls an "archive, fragments of people's lives". Once categorized by the colour spectrum, the mass of suspended detritus form a visual explosion - as if the viewer were witnessing a moment frozen in time.

The hanging sculpture is on display on the first floor of the building, accompanied by large photographs showing Haygarth's collections of objects, as well as an oak display case with a map and postcards describing his journey.

'Strand' can be viewed Monday-Friday, 9am - 5pm.
