Branches
Design Miami Basel
14 - 19 June 2010
Hall 5, Basel, Switzerland

Simon Heijdens immersive installations employ digital media to reveal how we relate to the spaces and objects around us, how that relationship evolves over the course of a day or a season. For Design Miami Basel 2010, Heijdens presented Branches, a ceiling based piece, which builds on his earlier works 'Tree' and 'Lightweeds' (now part of the permanent collection of MoMA). With both external sensors and internal movement monitors gathering data to feed to the computers, the digital branches acted like a living canopy of trees growing and responding to real-time information.

Tidal Ossuary by Julia Lohmann and Gero Grundmann
Jacqueline Rabun Gallery
5 February - 4 March 2010
32 Grosvenor Crescent Mews. London SW1X 7EX

Tidal Ossuary continued Lohmann and Grundmanns investigations into the contradictions inherent in our relationship to animals as sources of food and materials. The series of small, covetable vessels are made from found animal bones, collected on the banks of the River Thames. Lohmann and Grundmanns sensitive handling of the materials and exquisite attention to detail have restored the discarded bones into beautiful objects of use and worth.

Drawn from Clay - Noordoostpolder
Brompton Design District
5 March - 3 April 2009
29 Thurloe Place, South Kensington. London SW7

Nadine Sterk and Lonny van Rijswijck, who together make up Atelier NL, spent months exploring the fields and agricultural particularities of the Noordoostpolder region of central Netherlands. The resulting exhibition was a rigorous yet truly beautiful presentation of their findings.

Drawn From Clay emphasised Atelier NLs sensitive and research-led approach to design. Through geological samples and photographs presented alongside their hand-moulded clay vessels made from the various soil deposits collected, Sterk and van Rijswijck address important issues of place, identity and worth.
